QUILTING BOOK & MAGAZINE BIBLIOGRAPHY(last updated: JULY, 2022)
|
QUILTING BOOKS AND MAGAZINES BIBLIOGRAPHYIf you wish to see the Table of Contents and more information on a given title(and I happen to have it in this collection), there will be a review button you can click on that will bring up a new page with more detailed information. Just close the tab when you're done and you can resume browsing in the place you detoured from on this bibliography page. If the bibliography was helpful to you, please feel free to let others know about it. If there are things you see that are wrong/missing/needs work, be a saint and let me know. I'm currently a one woman band on this page, and my fingers and brain get tired. I can use all the help and advice I can get. Any information I don't have to go hunting for myself is a godsend, and deeply appreciated. It takes very little time for me to fix something, or to add another entry with information sent to me, but it can take up huge swaths of time hunting for mistakes and generally finding all the bits of information for missing entries. I want all the bib pages to be as complete as possible - and useful as possible, so people can FIND the information they're looking for. If you have books and magazines to donate to the bibliography, email me at akamoraih[at]gmail[dot]com (and you know to replace the [at] and [dot] with the appropriate symbols, right?) Sorry I have to do it that way, or I end up flooded with spam from robots trolling for email addresses. |

ACADEMIC STUDY of quilting is actually a thing. There are museums and study groups dedicated to this, and of course there are published academic works on the subject - much more than you'd think. I don't have a lot of this material in my collection because I was largely unaware it existed. If you have an interest in the history and social context of quilts and quilting, there is quite a bit of literature on the subject. I will also be listing all the material I am aware of about conserving, restoring, and cleaning quilts here because I don't think there is enough of it to warrant its own page, but I didn't want it to get lost on this massive page either! ANONYMOUS "Q" SERIES is a series of books published without designer, publisher or copyright date. The only reason I know these are all from one series as that two of the books I have advertise the others on the back. At some point, hopefully, I will run across an ad for them in a magazine and move this page to the publisher's name and have at least an approximate time period to pin it to. If the numbering of this series is consistant, then there are at least 18 books in the series. In order to bring up the pop-up page, just click:

CAROL ARMSTRONG is prolific enough she gets her own page. She does amazing applique of birds, flowers, dogs, cats and butterflies that have to be seen to be believed. In order to bring up the pop-up page, just click:

ART QUILTS: GALLERY/ARTIST BOOKS of which there are a great many are going to be on this page. I don't have a lot of them for review. Some of them do double duty on this bib page and the academic bib page. In order to bring up the pop-up page, just click:
ART QUILTS: GALLERY/ARTIST BOOKS |
|
ART QUILTS: WORKBOOKS art books that give tutorials on how to create your own art quilts. I am putting these books separate from the gallery books because they will be lost on the page with all the gallery books. Some of these will be gallery books too - artists should show their work, after all, if they want you to see what you can accomplish with their methods. But I wanted you to be able to browse the books where artists make the time and effort to try and teach us their methods, rather than just showcase their work. Aunt Martha's quilting patterns came in kits, transfer sheets in "Workbasket" magazine, transfer sheets sold in packages, and in booklets. They tended to be applique or embroidered blocks, but there was some patchwork which were presented in a series of booklets - these are what my mother had. I'm the one who started to collect the magazine and transfer sheets. The page for that is down in the magazine section at the bottom of this page. Iron-On Transfers for Quilt Labels, by Barbara Baatz (TPB:1999)

BABY OR CRIB QUILTS are a subgenre of quilts that has an important niche. Quilts are often made to commemorate special events - and what is more special than the birth of a child? I recall "Workbasket" magazine providing quite a few applique patterns for this niche in the early years of its publication, and a suprising number of books are dedicated exclusively to this topic. I'm going to include DOLL & CRADLE QUILTS on this page, and KID'S QUILTS - because aren't they always going to be our babies? Since I've got dedicated pages to subjects like quilting and Sunbonnet Sue, I decided this would be a useful one to have as well.
In order to bring up the pop-up page, just click:

ED & STEVIE BALDWIN ran a business called The Family Workshop based in Bixby, Oklahoma. They were a husband and wife team who published a large number of craft books that covered a wide spectrum. I have all five of their cloth doll books, but they did much more than that - like quilting - so I've provided a link here. In order to bring up the pop-up page, just click:

BALTIMORE ALBUM are a regional specialty quilt of applique and embroidery that are amazing eye candy and very distinctive, like the Hawaiian quilts, to a specific part of the country. Quite a bit of effort has been expended to document and offer quilters the ability to reproduce them. Elly Sienkiewicz in particular has specialized in this quilt and published a great deal of material on the subject. Most of the materials listed on her page are also listed here.
In order to bring up the pop-up page, just click:

BARGELLO QUILTS are a subgenre of quilts that deserve their own page. I don't own but a small handful, but now I've at least got a wishlist pieced together...

CHERYL A BENNER was prolific enough she gets her own page. My rule of thumb is if you have published at least 10 books, you get your own page, or made a serious contribution to the magazines. BETTER HOMES AND GARDENS put out a large number of special editions - both books and magazines - for a wide spectrum of crafts. Quilting especially hit the jackpot. Barbara Brackman meets my rule of 10 or more books to get her own dedicated page. More importantly, she an important documenter for women's craft history. SUSAN BRISCOE has quite a few books on two subjects - quilting and Sashiko embroidery. She wrote a compendium for quilting techniques that is quite useful, and has published about an equal number of books in both the USA and the UK about Japanese quilting and embroidery, so, an interesting lady.

PLAYING CARDS So, I ran across an interesting deck of cards that used 54 commissioned art quilts for the card faces. I found a deck of them for a very reasonable price and ordered them because I have no self control when it comes to interesting eclectic esoterica. While I was paying for them, I came across ads for Other decks that featured quilts as a theme. Apparently, there are a lot more than 10 of them. I know I don't have them all listed yet, but I've made a start. In order to bring up the pop-up page, just click:

DOVER PUBLICATIONS is such an important presence in the crafting community - I'm not sure there is a craft they haven't contributed some important book to, and their many many clip-art and themed art compilations are such a treasure trove of useful stock art for a wide diversity of uses. They have brought back into print so many books that we would otherwise not had access to because of scarcity that I can't begin to name them all. The Dover Publishing catalog is still very much a work-in-progress, but a start has been made and they did not neglect quilting in their needlearts lines.

HOUSE OF WHITE BIRCHES is what Tower Press became. Tower Press was the King of rural domesticity for several decades, cheerfully reprinting patterns from older magazines, usually with any identifying marks filed off unless it was someone famous like Mary Card. They also delved deeply into personal collections, like Ruby Hinson Duncan's quilt block catalog. House of White Birches carried on after Tower Press quite a while, and happened to publish a really nice hardcover set of quilting books that my mom chose to collect. They must not have come out as a set, but indvidually over time, as mom had duplicates of some them. I know other books by HWB will show up over time as well, so they're getting their own page. KALEIDOSCOPE QUILTS refer to a very specific technique of cutting blocks from patterned fabrics in such a way they are all identical despite the seemingly random pattern of the fabric. Fabric patterns have a periodicity, and when stacked correctly, will provide the quilter with however many repeats of the pattern she was willing to buy. This type of quilt tends to generate a lot of wasted fabric for the scrap bag, but gives you eye candy that is jaw-dropping amazing.

LANDSCAPE QUILTS are some of the most amazing quilts you'll ever lay eyes on. There are so many different ways to approach them - and there are a lot of books on the subject. This was an area of quilting that didn't interest my mother, so she didn't pick up books on them - the reviews on this page are courtesy of my magpie nature when it comes to thinking I really want to do this at some point down the road.

MEDALLION QUILTS are a subgenre of quilts that features one central motif in the center of the quilt instead of broken down into discreet blocks that repeat. Lone Stars are an example of this. I don't have a lot listed yet, but I wanted to set the page up to remind myself to fill this in. If you are a fan of medallion quilts and have books on the subject, a list of them would be really helpful for getting this page filled in.

QUILTING is what happens when you sandwich a layer of batting between a backing and a pieced top and sew them together. You can hand-quilt, machine-quilt or simply tie at regular intervals - it's all good and called quilting. One quilter famously titled her book "It's Not a Quilt Until It's Quilted." Because we can confuse the verb with the noun so easily, I thought it would be a good idea to start a page that focused on the verb - the act of actually quilting a quilt. Mom happened to collect a nice assortment of quilting books - she and my grandmother did their own quilting on a 12-foot monster grandmother kept in her renovated attached garage. It was a great set-up and many quilts got quilted. I will also be listing any trapunto books I run across as a related field that has some cross-over with this particular discipline.

REDWORK EMBROIDERED QUILT BLOCKS are a very distinctive class of quilt that uses a classic embroidery technique to make the blocks. I don't have much on this page yet - need to research. RODALE PRESS, INC. published a really nice hardcover set of quilting books that my mom chose to collect. They must not have come out as a set, but indvidually over time, as mom had duplicates of some of them. This collection had many contributors to their imprint, so I thought it best to put all of these books as a set on a page dedicated to Rodale Press. Bear in mind there are tons of other quilting books published by Rodale Press that are listed under the designer's names not on this page. I set up this page exclusively for those books that were published as house books. In order to bring up the pop-up page, just click:

TANGRAMS aren't necessarily something you'd immediately associate with quilting, but it seems to me that some of our cleverest piecers have gotten inspiration here. I have a fondness for tangrams and happen to have a few books on the subject. I also know of quite a few more. In order to bring up the pop-up page, just click:

CONNIE TESENE is definitely prolific enough to get her own page. She is sharing a page with Mary Tendall Etherington, since they co-authored many of their books. My rule of thumb is if you have published at least 10 books, you get your own page, or made a serious contribution to the magazines. In order to bring up the pop-up page, just click:

Tower Press, Inc. put out a slew of Blue Ribbon Pattern Books in 1970, which were simply reprinted patterns and articles from the pages of their many magazine titles. They were printed on the same cheap newsprint as the magazines, without the glossy cover - or any artwork except a generic blue ribbon logo. If you've seen one cover, you've seen them all. I'm still a ways away from having the complete run, though I think I'm close on at least having a complete listing of them. Some of them were the many quilt projects that got published in their pages over the years. If you're having trouble finding all the issues that had the pattern you are interested in, you may want to scan the list and see if they collected it in one of these Blue Ribbon booklets - it may be easier for you to find. |
