JEAN RAY LAURY
(March 22, 1928 - March 2, 2011) Mrs. Laury was one of the first artists to use and promote quilting as an art medium and was powerfully influential, inspiring many others to follow suit. She wrote books and articles and lectured, teaching more than 2,000 workshops over the course of her career. Her artwork is displayed in banks and boardrooms, and she paved the way for other fiber artists to get paid like artists. I'm not sure we fully appreciate what a debt we owe her for the path she created for all of us. I was first introduced to her work through her cloth doll book, which wasn't like any other cloth doll book I'd ever encountered before. She was a front runner in so many interesting and helpful ways. I'm sorry I never got the opportunity to meet her and thank her for her work. Her publishing history is long and varied - she applied her creativity to a lot of different disciplines.
Along with her books, she published articles in "Better Homes and Gardens", "Family Circle", "Cosmopolitan", "Needle and Craft"...
