SUMMARY- The cover quilt piece "Sue Makes a Quilt," was designed and appliqued by Linda M Throckmorton. The pattern is in this edition, along with 125 other block designs with Sue and her family as the theme. There are four(4) volumes of this series, each with 126 block designs with the Sunbonnet Sue theme. That's a whole lot of Sunbonnet! I'm amazed there aren't a ton of these on the used market, but I guess not as many people bought them as I would have guessed.

There are two blocks in particular I wish to bring attention to - one that delighted me and one that appalled me. "The Lacemaker" by Judy M Sweets brought a smile to my face. It's clear our favorite little girl is making bobbin lace on a pillow. It makes me want to make a pillow with this applique on it for all my favorite bobbin lacers. The one that appalled me is titled "Shame On You, Sunbonnet Sue" and shows an expectant mother with a teddy bear and balloons. If you didn't know the title of it, you'd find it charming. It didn't hurt that the sample stitched up in the "Family 6" block was very well done and even had a bit of tatting(another kind of lace) peeking out along the hem of her dress as though part of her petticoat were showing. Knowing the title of it, though, just floors me. Did the designer stitch this up with some relative or friend in mind? Did the designer give it to her with a smile on their face, and not tell her that this charming applique was a passive-aggressive rebuke of her so she'd proudly display the gift where the designer could smirk over it every time she visited? If it was a secret rebuke, it wasn't a very well kept one, since the designer also sent it in to be judged and published in a book.

I remember slut shaming pretty well. I worked at an all night diner for over a year, and my grandmother believed that meant I must be prosituting myself - apparently, that's what happened in all-night diner's in her younger days. I have never forgotten that humiliating lecture from her. Top that with a friend of mine who got pregnant by being raped, tried to get justice, and had the man walk free after his lawyer got him off because my friend didn't wear nun's habits, and carry a bible with her everywhere she went. Apparently, "No" doesn't actually mean "No" in Kansas. So, shame on you, June Wolpert of Nashville, Indiana. Shame on you. It wasn't the recipient of your malice who lacked moral character.

It took awhile, but I typed in all the block titles and their designers. I'll be doing that with the other three books in this series so if you're looking for a particular block or designer, you'll be able to figure out which of the four books it was in.
