In Memoriam

Platypus Publications, New York

Colette created Platypus Publications in 1969 to publish and sell patterns for stuffed dolls, animals, toys and quilted items. She also had a line of small booklets with information about dollmaking techniques under the Platypus imprint. All products of Platypus were exclusively developed by Colette. Platypus marketed via mail order from a 32pp catalog, and advertised in national craft magazines. Colette retired from direct selling some time in the mid-1990's. But her patterns can still be bought at Dollmaker's Journey or their Etsy Shop at Cloth Doll Patterns. They also have a short biographical essay by Colette at the bottom of the ordering page I enjoy reading.

Mrs. Wolff's neice and namesake has set up a webpage that gives deserved tribute to her beloved aunt, and showcases photos of a lot of Mrs. Wolff's work that has rarely been seen by the general public. I urge you to go take a look at https://colettewolff.com/

At the bottom of this page, I've also listed all the books, Newsletters and Magazine articles that Colette published. This bibliography was possible only by the generous sharing of Kristy Effinger's(aka Faery Lady in dollmaking circles), Ruth Wilson's and Phyllis McIntyre's knowledge and personal collections of Ms. Wolff's patterns and newsletters. This page is dedicated to these three ladies for their willingness to support and give substantial elbow grease to the building of this page! It would not exist without them. Thank you all.

Listings for patterns(below the books) are more or less in Alphabetical order by Subject done in bold(er) letters:

PLATYPUS NEWSLETTER

Kristy and Ruth have some back issues of Ms. Wolff's newsletter they are willing to share, which published articles Ms. Wolff didn't publish anywhere else like: how to make doll wigs in loose styles, a history of "Dolls by the Yard" (printed on fabric to cut out and sew), announcements of new patterns to her line and discontinuations of old ones, a small "freebie" pattern (baby's clutch-ball,), book reviews, announcements of dollmaking events, complete lists of her pattern and supplies lines, questions and answers from customers about making her dolls, descriptions/sketches of variations of her dolls from pictures that customers sent her (eg, a Veronica done as an American Indian.)

There didn't appear to be any particular periodicity(so I have no idea how many are missing from this list as many of the newsletters were hand stamped with the date the order they went out with, and not an overall publication date), and the format changed from 8"x5 1/2" to a full 11"x8 1/2". If anyone has more information of this newsletter they'd like to share with other Colette Wolff fans, please contact me at akamoraih[at]gmail[dot]com!
