Aunt Martha's

"Aunt Martha's" is a brand name that millions of women over most of a century have used for pleasure and decorating their homes. I grew up with these patterns all around me in the form of pillows, tea towels, bathroom towels, curtains, clothing, and quilts. All of the women in my family for generations have done some sort of handwork, and usually 3 or a dozen or so. My own mother was no exception, and tried her hand at many different disciplines before she settled on quilting. "Workbasket" was the magazine that Colonial Patterns Inc. produced in conjunction with their huge line of Aunt Martha's iron-on transfers. I'm a little in awe of Clara Tillotson's artistic talent(and salesmanship). She and her husband were poor and struggling, when she hit upon the idea of a line of embroidery patterns, and a small digest magazine to go with it. "Aunt Martha's Workbasket" began at her kitchen table. The first issue was sent out October 1935, and it began a profitable business that sustained generations of crafters. This is a catalog of the quilt-related products she developed, which I believe between my mother and grandmother they must have had all of at one point. I'm not going to do individual review pages for most of them - all the information I have on them will be to the right of cover scan. I will fill in the stubs as I'm able.
