CROCHET BOOK BIBLIOGRAPHY(last updated: June, 2021)There isn't much on this page yet except for the tatting designers who were also crochet pattern designers, the big compilations of needlecraft books by thread manufacturers(American Thread, Coats & Clark, Lily Mills, etc) and the craft magazines that I have that published crochet patterns. I'm sorry this list is so thin. But all things have a beginning. None of my main bibliography pages started out looking like much - they all began like this. I have a big collection of Elizabeth Hiddleson books and magazine articles as well that I'm very excited about and you'll love the bio that I and some friends were able to put together with help of Mrs Hiddleson's family! I've also ended up with a small handful of Augusta Pfeuffer and Louise Nacke crochet books from the 1910's/20's who weren't tatters, but were published by a St. Louis publisher who published a lot of designers who also tatted.

ALPHABETICAL INDEX BY AUTHORS' LAST NAMES |
AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY I've moved these booklets to their own page. Not all of them have crochet patterns in them, and most have a mix of different disciplines(knitting, crochet, tatting). With the considerable help of Becky Clark, we've pieced together a list of nearly all the booklets they published! So if you were ever curious, you can now take a look in one simple click of your mouse. I'd been piecing this list together for over a decade, and Becky filled in all the blanks in just a few days. Hers is definitely the superior Keyboard Fu! In order to bring up the pop-up page, just click: AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY |

ELEANOR ARNOLD was the designer used by the Glasgo Lace Thread Company(Glasgo, Connecticut), who produced books to promote their threads at the turn of the last century. I've provided what little I was able to dig up about her work. In order to bring up the page of reviews for the Miss Arnold's books, just click: |
|
ASMUS BRADLEY COMPANY I've placed these booklets on their own page. So far I've only seen crochet booklets, and only a handful of those. With the help of Becky Clark, who also contributed two books to be reviewed, we've got this page completed to the best of our knowledge. If you know of other books they published or know more about the company, please get in touch through my contact page. In order to bring up the pop-up page, just click: ASMUS BRADLEY COMPANY |

BELDING BROTHERS & CO. SILK MANUFACTURERS I've moved all the Belding Brothers & Co. booklets to their own page. Very few of them have tatting patterns in them, and most have a mix of different disciplines(knitting, crochet, tatting). Founded in 1863, they too produced a line of pattern books that promoted the exclusive use of their threads. In order to bring up the pop-up page, just click: |

BETTER HOMES AND GARDENS put out a large number of special editions - both books and magazines - for a wide spectrum of crafts. Because there are so many, I've given all BHG's special interest craft books and magazines their own page. In order to bring up the pop-up page, just click:

ANNA WUERFEL BROWN(March 29, 1867 - March 31, 1935) Her books have her initials "AWB" in prominence on the covers. I've moved the listing and reviews of her booklets to their own page so that you don't have to scroll so much to get past them. Several of them have tatting patterns in them, and most have a mix of crochet and tatting. She was one of several prolific designers who published during the 1910's and '20's. WINIFRED WORTH CLARK(pen-name) "Grandmother Clark" published at least 31 books on a very wide array of disciplines, two of which have tatting in them. Becky Clark and I have started coming across books other than the two with tatting, so like the other designers from this time period, Winifred now has her own personal page. Becky came up with some interesting biographic information on the person behind the persona. In order to bring up the pop-up page, just click:

COATS & CLARK I've moved these booklets to their own page so that you don't have to scroll so much to get past them. Not all of them have tatting patterns in them of course, and most have a mix of different disciplines(knitting, crochet, tatting). I'd been piecing together a comprehensive list of all the booklets they'd published over the decades - and they were the 800 lb. gorilla in the thread industry - for over a decade, and then my friend, the amazing Becky Clark, filled in the rest of the list in just a few days. We have Becky to thank for the links to availabe pdfs of many of the early books as well. If you happen to encounter her, be sure to thank her for all the work she's done gratis for both the Craft Bibliography Project and for CRAFTREE.COM Without her, a staggering amount of information would still be lost and wandering in the electronic ether. DEXTER YARN COMPANY put out a line of crochet books to help promote their threads, and dipped their toe a bit in tatting. Their main designer was Lillian Frances Brown(for both crochet and tatting), but they also published a book of filet designs by the famous Mary Card, and later crochet books by Charlotte F. Boldtmann. Dexter Yarn Company was established in 1820, was run by three generations of the same family, then sold to Collingbourne Mills, Inc., March 1, 1927...

LILY MILLS COMPANY, Shelby, NC(USA) This is a series of needleart booklets(mostly crochet, but some tatting too) that is fairly close to home, as I live in North Carolina. ANNE ORR(1875-1946) I've moved the listing and reviews of her booklets to their own page. She was a prolific and very popular designer in the 1920's - 1940's, and is credited with innovating the split ring, a very important technique that didn't really catch on until Mary Sue Kuhn showed us all why we should have been paying attention. Ms. Orr was an extremely prolific designer - but much of the work published under Anne Orr Studios was by designers who worked for her, and not from her own hands. I think of her as the Edison of the fiber arts world. I'm still a long way from having a full run of her books, but I've managed to put together a fairly comprehensive list. PENELOPE I've moved the listing and reviews of the British Penelope booklets to their own page so that you don't have to scroll so much. I am aware of only five(5) of this line for tatting, but I could have easily missed some. PRISCILLA The popular women's magazine "Modern Priscilla" published a large number of craft booklets as well - three of which are for tatting. They've been reproduced and republished in many different places. I've moved the listing and reviews of the booklets to their own page so that you don't have to scroll so much to get past them. Most of the booklets are for needlework disciplines other than tatting, but I will list them all on this page along with the reviews for those I actually have original copies of. "Modern Priscilla" stopped publication in June 1930, and was folded into another popular women's magazine of the time, "Needlecraft: The Home Arts", which enjoyed regular publication for another decade after the merger. Tower Press, Inc. put out a slew of Blue Ribbon Pattern Books in 1970, which were simply reprinted patterns and articles from the pages of their many magazine titles. They were printed on the same cheap newsprint as the magazines, without the glossy cover - or any artwork except a generic blue ribbon logo. If you've seen one cover, you've seen them all(see the thumbnail cover in entry below this one). I only know of eight(8) of the series that included tatting patterns(p-110, p-150, p-170, p-175, p-220,p-380, p-480,p-490). "P-160: 23 Old Time Patterns" may have some tatting in it as well, since p-170-5 have the same title. I've gone ahead and made up a page for the titles of the series I'm aware of. Keep in mind it is not complete! |

Weldon's Practical Needlework set of 12 volumes is a collage of a great many disciplines, though knitting, crochet, and embroidery are the clear winners for attention in this set. I have not listed individual patterns in each volume, but I have listed the disciplines covered in each volume. They are exact reprints of the original compilations published around 1888. Interweave Press made them available again around 1999-2005, they've done reprints of specific issues for knitting since then. Here is the link to the catalog and review: WELDON'S PRACTICAL NEEDLEWORK |
