CATHERINE ELIZABETH(Betty) HARMON HIDDLESON
( Dec. 24, 1901 - January 31, 2003 )

Jennie made it her mission to preserve all this information and keep the books available for sale by buying the remaining stock from granddaughter Shirley Siracusa. Catherine Elizabeth Harmon was born December 24, 1901 in Batesville, Arkansas. She was the 5th child of eight, having two sisters and five brothers. Her parents and grandparents were farmers. She married for the first time at the age of sixteen in February 1918, and had her daughter Delena in August of that same year. Her marriage ended in divorce in 1925, and she remarried three years later to Vibart Hiddleson in Yakima, WA. It was her second marriage and his third. This marriage lasted 36 years until his death in 1965. By 1942, they had settled in Vallejo, California, where Elizabeth lived until 1999. She had a son William(Bill) with Vibart, who grew up to become a pastor. Elizabeth passed away January 31, 2003 at the age of 101. Her life, like Myrtle Hamilton's, spanned the entire 21st century!

Jennie was able to speak to Elizabeth's(Betty to her friends) lifetime business associate, Rita Burke, who owned the printing company Wheeler Printing, and got this story. ...Betty had brought Mrs. Burke two handwritten doily patterns to be published. Betty had already been to another printer in town, and he didn't want to bother with it. Mrs. Burke said that she would photograph the doily against a black background, and that there was somebody nearby who she had used before to type up the pattern. That was the beginning of a business relationship that lasted probably 30 years. Mrs. Burke said that Betty had it advertised in "one of those weekly newspapers," which I'm(Jennie) guessing was something like Grit. And at $.25 each she sold out in no time flat. So Betty started out selling individual patterns. Jennie has a photocopy of a newspaper article in the Vallejo newspaper about Mrs. Hiddleson and her enterprise. In it she says, "Call it vanity, but I wanted my name beside my designs." Betty had already had designs published by Coats&Clark, Lily Mills, the American Thread Co., etc., but they never named the designers...

Jennie doesn't think Betty copyrighted the first printings of her earlier books, but a copyright notice was added to later printings. Betty published a small edging book early on that isn't part of either of the main series of books. Betty sold the first 15 books on her own, then recruited her daughter Delena, who needed an income, and Delena helped to sell the next volumes which ended up being #16-49. When Delena died, Delena's daughter Shirley took over the sales of the first series of books. Betty in the meantime developed another series 1-A to 10-A of books to sell. Almost all of them were what we are used to seeing from her(lots of doilies!) except 1-A is a baby book, and 49 and 10-A are collar books specifically requested by Mr Blumenthal of Lily Mills. In addition to all of that are the unattributed designs published by the thread companies and magazines like "Workbasket" and "McCall's". She had a very popular column in Tower Press' "Popular Needlework" as well as designs peppering all of Tower Press's periodicals.(see the bottom of this page for all periodical listings that Leigh has been able to collect so far...). During all of this, Betty was working full time at the shipyard in Vallejo - just across the bay from San Francisco. All of the photos of people in Betty's books are of her family members. The collar books feature Shirley's daughter and Bill's wife, who is also the designer of some of the baby sets in the baby book.

Jennie believes Betty started self-publishing either the year before or the year after her son Bill's marriage in 1954. The info on the printing comes from the printing company's owner Marguerita(Rita) Burke, who is thanked in one of the volumes(*). Wheeler Printing was Betty's publisher from the first pattern to the last volume. Wheeler Printing still had all the original plates because the books were reprinted so many times over the decades. Mrs Burke told Jennie that when she died(she was still going into the office in her 80s!), her long-time employees would inherit the business because her own family didn't need it or want it. Jennie checked records later on, and discovered it was bought by another printer in Vallejo and sort of absorbed into that business. No one knows what happened to the original plates, since by that time most of the publishing industry had gone digital.

Betty continued to publish up into her 90's, in periodicals like "Magic Crochet" and "Decorative Crochet" as well as sister publications in Germany, England, France, and Spain. It isn't possible to get an accurate count of just how many designs Betty developed over her lifetime because of all the unattributed work she did for the thread companies and magazines. She was loyal to Lily Mills throughout her career, consistantly advertising only their threads in her own books. One of the interesting design features of Betty's work that grabbed my attention the most was her filet work in a circular, instead of the usual square format. She had bees and hearts and butterflies along with other motifs all dancing in circles along with the usual pineapples.I hope this page will give you an idea of just how creative and prolific this designer was, and how important her work became to the craft.

Note from Leigh- Betty did a brisk business in individual pattern sheet sales through mail-order along with the pattern books series. I've compiled a list of those advertised in the backs of the books and placed it under the picture to the left. After the first several books, I only listed new patterns presented for the first time at the bottom of the table of contents for each book so that the copyright date can be approximated. For those of you trying to collect all of her patterns, would you mind going through your collection and checking to see if I am missing any on the list?

Another Note from Leigh- I've finally gotten ahold of a couple years of "Magic Crochet"! I was skeptical that there would be several Hiddleson patterns in any given issue - as a designer, you were usually lucky to get one in. But it's true! What's even more amazing, as many Hiddleson doilies there were in any given issue, there were even more Glendola Hodges' doilies. There were also several Japanese designers that got tapped often. I don't know how anyone could possibly crochet that fast. Designing is a time-consuming process. There are some crochet designers who seemed to be able, though. I'm cataloging my pitiful handful of "Magic Crochet" here, in hopes it will convince someone to help me out with more issues. I'd love to complete this catalog!
