SUMMARY: This is a publication I have very mixed feelings about. It was dedicated to reprinting antique and vintage patterns from 35 years ago and older - which I am happy about. But they neither tested nor updated the directions of the patterns to modern parlance(for the first decade of publication) and used whatever quality photo they had of the original publication(which was often dreadful). So if you don't know how to interpret the instructions(assuming no mistakes were made in them the first time around) and aren't a genius at divining a pattern from a grainy photo on bad paper, all you can do is page through the issue wistfully. Except for a scattering of famous Mary Card patterns, the original designers aren't given - because the thread manufacturers didn't give the designers names when they originally published. If the thread manufacture is given in the pattern directions, I put that for reference with the pattern entry in the Table of Contents. They sometimes gave you the year of the pattern(about 65% of the time) but never gave the bibliographic info for original publication. At least the filet patterns don't need interpretation! The graphs are universally understood. I frown strongly at anyone who doesn't cite their sources, so I can't like this publication as much as I'd like to. They are, after all, providing a window on past triumphs of needlework design. It's just sadly a grubby unwashed window with greasy fingerprints and tattered cobwebs in the corners. Despite this, I've worked hard to put together a full run of this title because they did one thing that very few needlecraft magazines have ever done - and that's to print consistently high quality tatting articles.

One of the saving graces of the '80s' issues are the tatting articles by Myrtle Hamilton, who graced the pages of "Old-Time Crochet" from Winter 1982 to Spring 1987. She retired at the reasonable age of 91(ninety-one). If I'm still writing coherently at the age of 91, a medical miracle will have happened... Please check out my bio page for Mrs. Hamilton along with a checklist of her publication creds - her life spanned the entire 20th century!

In Summer 1992, "Old Time Crochet" decided to really embrace their inner Tatter with a great series of articles and several patterns per issue throughout the rest of the '90s. The author of the articles was Rebecca Hollenbaugh, and I enthusiastically recommend her articles. They ran until the Summer 2000 issue. The editorial staff also decided to update instructions and rephotograph the tested patterns - which made them much more accessible to a younger crowd of crocheters. Unfortunately, doing so was also the equivalent of filing the serial numbers off because the thread manufacturers were removed from the instructions - so your guess is as good as mine the origins of each pattern. The tatting pattern designers are always cited, though, so the design work there was treated with more respect than the signature topic the magazine was primarily covering. Odd, but true!

Darlene Polachic took over writing the tatting article in the Winter 2000 issue, and stayed until the end. She has done a lot of other work for Annie's Attic Inc., and is someone I think of as one of their staples.
There are only a few misshapen toys scattered widely through the issues. They are surprisingly rare for a crochet magazine. I've included an entry for this title in the Soft Toy and Doll Bib page only because there ARE a few patterns - but I would not recommend this title for those patterns.

This magazine didn't have as wide circulation as some of the other popular crochet magazines. A great shame, in my opinion, as it was the one crochet magazine that supported tatting the most after "Workbasket" ended in 1996. The last issue I have is for Autumn 2002 and there was no indication in it that it was going to be the last issue. So at the moment, I'm assuming it isn't the last issue, and I'm missing at least one.

Addendum: Martha Ess was able to confirm that the Autumn 2002 issue was indeed the last issue. She had a subscription, and the remainder of it was fulfilled with another magazine. Thank you, Martha, for letting me put this one to bed. :)
