PAPER DOLLS
This page is dedicated to a special type of doll that has been around for centuries. They are diverse in their sophistication and topics, and have given little girls(mostly) countless hours of delight. Some of us never grow out of them, thankfully. As a history resource on fashions, celebrity, and role-modeling, paper dolls are without peer. I've thought a lot about how to build this page, and how it fits into the Craft Bibliography Project's core goal. Here's what I decided. There are lots of fantastic books that compile the published paper dolls so that collector's have guides and lists of what they are trying to find for their collections. They are plentiful and cheap to find, so all I'm going to do with those is list and review them so you can scan the Table of Contents to see if that's the guide you need to find. I'm not going to try to transfer the contents of these books to this website so you don't have to go and purchase the book.
What I want to do here has a couple of parts. What I haven't found in any of the collector's guides are the paper dolls found in the doller's magazines - not even the Mary Young guide especially for the magazine paper dolls. It focuses on all the women's mainstream magazines instead. So, beneath the books I will start to build a catalog of all the many paperdoll newsletters and magazines(Please help!), and below that, I will build a bibliography of all the articles about and of paper dolls that have been published in the doller magazines. I don't have many of the paperdoll newsletters yet, so that is the area I need the most help in. If you have runs of these periodicals available to donate or sell, you would be helping a great many people trying to figure out where and when the articles they most need were published. I curate all materials for the Craft Bibliography Project, and spend small fortunes just on the bags, boards and acid free boxes used to store them. We badly need this resource, and I can't build it without access to the relevant materials.
The last component to this page, and the fun one for me, is creating a database for those who want to make their own paper dolls. That is the core goal of this website - to provide the bib details necessary for people to be able to pursue excellence in their chosen craft. I've thought about what that entails. There are a handful of books that encompass the subject of creating one's own paper dolls, but not a lot. I'll try to find and list all those I can. But. The skills and resources necessary to create paper dolls is almost entirely being able to render the human figure, successfully model the clothing you want for your dolls, create the hair styles in an appealing way, and get creative in the way the dolls are posed, turned into action figures, accessorized, colored, and produced. That's opening up a huge and bottomless ocean of potential libraries of books that can be used for this. I could really use help here too. If you are an artist, and especially if you've created paper dolls yourself, a list of the books that were the most helpful to you achieving that would be a great blessing. I'm going to try to break down the components to a successful paper doll into discreet pages that will be simple at first. The first will simply be drawing the HUMAN FIGURE and FASHION. I can be more helpful with the latter one to begin with because I am a professional costumer. While the book I have that detail patterns for certain fashions may not be as helpful, I also have plenty of books that cover fashion over the centuries, as I never know what time period someone will ask for a custom piece for. I once spent a summer creating costumes for a Shakespeare in the Park troupe - on a miniscule budget. I knew every thrift store owner in the area by their first name.
