WORKBASKET TATTING PATTERN BIBLIOGRAPHY: BOOKMARKS

Here are a few things you may not know about Workbasket:

  • It started out titled Aunt Martha's Workbasket: Home and Needlecraft for Pleasure and Profit and was first published in October 1935.
  • "Aunt Martha's" was dropped from the title in 1941.
  • It continued to publish throughout World War II, even during the severe paper shortage and recycling efforts of the time period. Because of the shortages and recycling, issues prior to 1944 are very difficult to find!
  • Workbasket was in continuous publication until May of 1996.
  • The magazine was family owned its entire existance, but by two different families.
  • It was published monthly from 1935 to 1980, then ten times a year from 1980 through 1990(with Jun/July and Nov/Dec being combined issues), and finally went bimonthly in 1991 to its end in 1996.
  • To my knowledge, Tatting patterns didn't start showing up in Workbasket until 1944, where they began with a series of three lessons, despite the popularity of Priscilla Magazine throughout the 1930's."
