SUMMARY- The ladies certainly know their bobbin and needle laces. It was fascinating to read the descriptions and noted differences between a bewildering array of handmade laces. If you are interested in these laces, this is a very useful and engaging book. I was less impressed with their short articles on what they categorized as craft laces - knitting, crochet, tatting, netting, macrame, Tenerife, and cutwork embroidery(of which there are many varieties they did not go into). I felt that chapter could have been 3x longer and still not covered it all. The only one I can claim any expertise in is tatting because of my extensive library on the subject, and I was underwhelmed by their coverage of that - but keep in mind, your mileage may vary. I did love their chapter on machine laces and how to tell the difference from handmade. You get neat snapshots of history and of the machines used to mimic various laces. The best for me was Chapter 10: Spot the Difference. They give you several examples of similar looking laces, then give detailed explanations of what details they are looking for in order to make an identification. Overall a very informative book and a fun read.
