Notes: Thanks to Mary Lowry for sharing the Table of Contents and the cover with us! She was given a handful of these issues as a gift from her lace instructor, and she took the time to go through this issue to construct a ToC of the contents so we'll know what's there!(thank you!!!). You can see Lieve hadn't settled on a name for her periodical yet...and I now have a copy of this issue from Mary Mangan, an excellent researcher with a grant to fill in the Wikipedia pages on lace! Thank you so much for helping to fill in this excellent periodical on lace!

SUMMARY: Of the issues I've got, this magazine focused entirely on bobbin laces in the early issues - no articles on tatting and other kinds of lace making until later. Financing appeared to be a bitter struggle in the early years. I've seen Volume 56 from 2, 2000 so I know the title lasted over a decade, but issues are hard to find. I still only have about half of them, but will try hard to fill in more as I can find them. I find this title interesting for its lean towards scholarly essays on historic lace development, and even more interesting as they broadened their scope to more and different kinds of lace. You get patterns sprinkled throughout, but those are the icing rather than the cake. I love, love, Love intensely Lieve's and her staff of writers' propensity to include bibliographies at the ends of their articles like a scientific journal would. They not only educate, but invite you to delve into the same materials they did to decide for yourself if their conclusions were correct.

Lieve came across this page and got in touch! She has confirmed that there are 56 issues - and she has extra copies of many of the issues I'm missing! I am over the moon right now with joy! This journal has been near the top of my wishlist to finish for many years now. Lieve is going to get it so much closer! And even better news - she intends to convert the entire run of issues into digital editions so that new generations of lacers will be able to access them! I will set up a link when she is ready.

Berthilda Vandoren, who authored the series of articles on the history of lace that ran for 27 issues, was Lieve's mother. From Lieve's website I found out that her grandmother also did bobbin lace, as Lieve uses her grandmother's oak bobbins to do her own lacing with copper wire. So at least three generations of Lieve's family were lacers. No wonder she opened up a school! That is a wonderful legacy, and I'm glad she has shared it so generously with all of us over her lifetime.

Photo of Lieve modelling one of her copper lace body ornaments. Photo used with kind permission.

Lieve Jerger has a website where you can see her stunning artwork: www.copperlace.com. She does bobbin lace with copper wire - a whole other dimension of difficult than I can imagine. Your jaw will drop taking in "Carriage of Lost Loves", a three-dimensional piece that she started in 1977 and completed in 2021. If you understand how bobbin lace is made and the time involved, you'll be impressed that it only took that long! I think it is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. I'm really happy that Lieve is still active and still working in lace.

Lieve also coauthored a children's story book with Phil Yeh, titled "The Winged Tiger and the Lace Princess"(©1998;ISBN: 0964414945). It looks like panels of "Carriage of Lost Loves" were used in the story. I was quite enchanted with it! Now I have to buy a copy...
