SUMMARY- I've enjoyed using Mrs. Sunderman's "Tatted Snowflakes" published the same year by Dover Press for many years, and had no idea(but often wished) that she had published anything else. So I was wildly excited for three reasons when I ran across a reference to this book on Georgia Seitz' website: 1) It was something new from one of my favorite snowflake designers! 2) It was a TATTING DICTIONARY that proceeded Judith Connor's by over a decade! and 3) It included a Monogram set - how in the world did she know how much I love monogram sets?!
It's like she read my mind. I love dictionaries and encyclopedias - I was quite upset when my mom refused to let me take our set of encyclopedias when I left home(even though I was the ONLY person in the house who ever used them). It was by far the most expensive thing I bought after leaving home(even more than my car). I went for the beautiful padded faux leather binding(black) with protective gilding on the page edges(Encyclopedia Britannica, of course). It's beautiful, it's even bigger than my mom's set, and it was all MINE. That was the feeling I got when I opened that package all unawares of what was waiting for me inside. Rick came running when I yelled - I think he thought I'd dropped something on my foot. But no, it was this book that slid out of the mailer into my hands.
It's primitive - but aren't all firsts? She includes photos and illustrations with many of her entries because that gets the point across better than a thousand words would. Her explanations are clear and crisp. She has a page explaining all the foreign names she knew of for tatting. And you get a split-ring alphabet. I'm so very happy to add this book to the collection. Thank you, Mrs. Sunderman, for truly brightening my day!
