NOTES: "Pineapple Heaven" Doily by Doretha Albee was originally published in Doretha's newsletter "Tatting Knots and Notes", but was reprinted in a smaller version in Georgia Seitz's wonderful "Tatting With Friends" - and both sizes were reprinted in Doretha's book
"Tatting Knots & Notes Revisited, Book 1" . Doretha states that the doily comes out to 12" diameter in size 40 Lizbeth thread. She based it on a crochet pattern in Anchor's "Elegant Pineapple, Lace Crochet, Book 10", Art. #17749. Since the patterns are diagrammed instead of written out, she felt it wouldn't be hard to tat them rather than crochet them. Doretha's newsletter was rare and hard to find, but I was given custody of all of Doretha's manuscripts, and permission to digitize and offer the pdfs for free here! It will take me some time to get everything scanned and converted, but they will be available to download from "Tatting Knots & Notes" catalog and review page.

NOTES: "Pineapple Doily" by Nellie Becker of South Royalton, Vermont is another lovely and unique piece that really captures the look of the crocheted pineapple doilies. Instructions are in written notation and there is no diagram, but the instructions are broken down well enough I don't think anyone would have trouble following them. IOLI lending library has this booklet and may be the only way you can find it now - it's long out of print.

NOTES: It's called Gwen's Request because her friend Gwen asked for a tatted version of a small crochet doily that she had, and Camelia created this. I've left the photo full-size so that it can be downloaded(or blown up on your own screen) for the stitch counts. Camelia has put the stitch counts on the picture, and has only two conditions for using it - 1) Keep her name with it as designer/creator, and 2) It is free to any who want it. NOTES: This misses being the earliest tatted pineapple by exactly four(4) years. Both early pineapple patterns were published in the same American magazine. Karey Solomon reprinted this one with updated(and much easier to follow) instructions in "Tatting Times", February 2005. The original pattern is no longer under copyright, and Craftree.com has a nice pdf of it available for download(Thank you!) I also have the issue it was published in, if you have questions. Or you can buy the first 25 years of "Tatting Times" from Karey and get a huge bonanza of patterns - proceeds from the sale of the CD go to a worthy charity.
PS- I found this reprinted once again in the May 1984 issue of "Tatting Knots & Notes" published and edited by Kathryn J Johns.

It's the only book I'm aware of for tatting with the double bobbin shuttles. NOTES: Georgia Seitz told me she thought Myrtle had published a pineapple doily pattern, and I've been searching fruitlessly for it ever since. I'm a huge fan of Myrtle's and have made a point of trying to gather a complete collection of all her patterns - which is really difficult. She published exclusively through magazines, mostly with Tower Press and Workbasket. Tower Press put out a lot of magazines with very similar formats, so Myrtle's patterns got spread across several of them. I'm still struggling to complete my run of "Popular Needlework", "Women's Household", and "Women's Circle", and have only a small handful of "Women's Comfort." We will likely never know just how many of the "Workbasket" patterns are unattributed Hamilton's. If anyone has more information - or issues to donate or sell - please get in touch through my contact page. I have permission from the family to digitize and make the PDFs available of her patterns, so that is another huge project on the already long list...

NOTES: This is a really lovely doily! Because I've seen her name spelled a couple of different ways, I'm providing the link to my review so you'll at least know what the cover of the book looks like. It's a very pricey import, but I think well worth the effort and expense to find.

NOTES: Selma and Ed Morin brought needle tatting back to life back in the late '70's/early '80's. This is a collection of doilies I like, but it's the pineapple doily that has a special place in my heart. It's impossible to find now. If you DO run across this shrink-wrapped sheet of patterns, grab it quick. You'll never run across another one. If you run across two, grab the second one for me and I'll be happy to reimburse you.

NOTES: I ran across this gem while cataloging issues for IOLI. The sample was worked by Rachel Wareham and earned a place of honor on the back cover of this issue. The doily when completed in #30 thread measures about 8". I've been keeping an eye out for 1948 issues of "New England Homestead Magazine" so I can get a more precise date of publication - so far, no joy.

NOTES: This is a lovely single pineapple motif. She doesn't give the pattern, per se, but she shows you in steps how she constructed it from the picture she drew - very neat. It is certainly worth a trip to her blog, which is in English.

NOTES: This is the earliest tatted pineapple pattern I've come across - and it's a doozy. Instructions are in old-school written notation, and I have not checked them for accuracy. Mrs. Wilburn included four different tatted bonnets in her article, but the pineapple bonnet is the prettiest and most elaborate. This is the pattern that Kendra Goodnow based her doily off of!

Heidi did all of us a very great favor.
