SUMMARY- Ms. Morton is a shuttle tatter. She uses traditional written notation in this book but gives diagrams to back up her written instructions. You get crisp black-and-white photos of each sample. Beads are often incorporated into the design. You get a small eclectic mix of patterns here that could be used for a variety of occasions. There is a flower corsage, collar, beaded butterfly, pansy edging, two snowflake motifs, earrings, stick pin brooch, choker necklace, necklace and earring set, and a lucky horseshoe. I especially like the lucky horseshoe - not many people remember the tradition of nailing a horseshoe up over the front entrance of newlyweds' home to catch luck. I believe it started fading when motorcars made the horse as a principle mode of conveyance a thing of the past and horseshoes became rare. Nailing a car tire over your front door just didn't feel the same, I guess.
This book is impossible to find for sale now, but don't despair. All of the patterns from her first four books were compiled and reprinted in a perfect bound edition "Tatting Patterns"(ISBN: 1-86108-261-4), which is still in print as of this writing...
