SUMMARY- This book was the dry run for the better known Dover reprint. The Dover book is much easier to find and has more patterns in it. I've made tons of them for presents over the years, so I was delighted to get to see a first printing, courtesy of Anitra Stone's personal collection! The patterns are in written notation with a black-and-white sample photo for each. She didn't break her patterns down, so my Dover book is bulging with sticky notes with the patterns written out in a way I don't get lost. This notation was the standard for a very long time and you'll run across a lot of patterns written in the same manner in just about any magazine of the 20th century. This is a great book for beginners, with patterns that range from simple to moderately complicated, and attractive enough to make you want to give it a try. I do recommend getting the Dover reprint, though, because the patterns were corrected for the 1989 reprint, and it includes more patterns than this first edition.
