SUMMARY- Ms. Groves' historical essays are well spiced with excerpts from letters of the time period in question, museum collections, estate sale documents - she developed her essays based on evidence of the time period, and expressed doubts where doubts were appropriate like when a claim was made but no evidence could be found to substantiate it. This book was heavily researched and a fascinating read. The book on knotting and tatting is only five pages, with three more pages of black-and-white photos to show examples of both knotting and tatting and the tools used to accomplish both. For such a short article, I thought it was well argued and the examples given for her arguments substantial enough to support her positions. I was impressed, and would recommend it for the shelf of anyone who is fascinated by the history of their craft.
