SUMMARY- I had high hopes when I ordered this book. It had been mentioned in a thinner volume "Square Knot, Tatting, Fringe and Needle Work" that tatting was also referenced in this book. Yes, it is. It turns out that the thinner book was just an excerpted chapter of the encyclopedia, so the reference is word for word what I already had. There isn't much actual tatting in this book in that there is only an illustrated example of making a ring, and it is not explained in the terms used for needlework but in nautical terms. I found it fascinating but probably not worth most needlecrafter's time unless you are also interested in ropework. There are some marvelous braids and knotting designs - I loved a lot of the belt designs. But as a reference for tatting as a seaman's passtime, this was a disappointment.
