SUMMARY- This is the sort of book that I naturally enjoy, until I stumble across a Pollywog or Sambo in the mix. Seeing them makes me sad - not because I'm nostalgic for them, but because the open racism they imply makes me cringe inside. Maybe there will come a day in the distant future when we all(the entire spectrum of the human race) can laugh and not notice the subtle implications of these dolls and notice only the charm because racism really is a forgotten problem, but that probably won't be in my lifetime. Patterns are fairly crude and rely on the skill of the seamstress to give them charm in added details. The patterns are gridded for scalability, and have no markings to aid the sewer to speak of. There is a nice variety, and because they are simple they may appeal to a beginner.
