PATTERN RATING:. Patterns given are consistently well marked and usually full-size. The projects chosen were consistently good quality and ran the gamut of skill levels. There were always at least five projects in each issue.
INSTRUCTION RATING:. Instructions were usually broken down by body part and then by numbered steps, and had illustrations to go with them. Of the half dozen projects I checked closely, I had no problems following along.
BONUS MECHANICS RATING:. There aren't a lot of stand alone Techniques articles in Doll Life, so picking up new skills from the magazine isn't going to happen unless it's incorporated into a project. They did have a few sprinkled throughout, though, and the articles they published were informative and engaging. This rating is misleading because in PATTERN and INSTRUCTION, one star would be dreadful, for a magazine or book to have any stars at all in MECHANICS is like adding a "plus" to the other ratings! I may rethink how I want to credit technique teaching, but for now you get this longwinded explanation!
SUMMARY: This is another magazine that dabbles in a lot of different dolling areas. It's primarily a "how-to", though, with collecting and paper dolls thrown in for fun. They started the magazine with at least one kid's project in each issue, but seem to have gotten away from that fairly quickly. The primary emphasis was on sewn dolls, though it did run articles on sculpting in clay. I don't know for sure what the last issue was, so I may or may not have a complete run of "Doll Life", depending. Since WorldCat and the Library of Congress don't know, I'm reduced to hunting for them till I find the issue that says "LAST ISSUE!" - or words to that effect...
