SUMMARY: "Doll Crafter" was merged with "Doll Costuming", a terrific "How To" magazine, in Jan. 2006, and became "Doll Crafter & Costuming", which ceased publication in 2010. I've had a remarkably difficult time trying to put together a run of "Doll Crafter". Until 1991, it deals almost exclusively with crafting porcelain dolls, instead of cloth or even sculpy, but there's still a lot to pick up here for other crafters who don't happen to have a kiln handy(Goldstein's tutorials alone are well worth hunting these magazines down), and the pattern inserts in each issue are awesome. These patterns are strongly sought after, and part of the problem with trying to complete a run is finding issues that still have this pattern intact! "Doll Crafter" very seldom dipped into fantasy, preferring antique or reproduction dolls. I was lucky to run across a copy of the first issue with the pullout pattern intact - but still missing the "write for" skirt pattern.

Publication values were very high from the start for "Doll Crafter" with full color photos and well written articles. My only complaint is the advertising-to-article ratio of 4:1(4pages of ads to every page of article). I understand that they had to pay for the gorgeous full color pictures for the projects this way, but it still annoys me to have to leaf through the majority of the magazine in order to find the articles. Because of the prominent importance of the Poissot patterns in this magazine, I'm including a picture of the pattern with each issue entry below the Table of Contents, for quick visual reference. I don't do this for any other magazine run, but this one seemed to demand it. They also had Poissot patterns they sold separately from the magazine for a while. I've put a list of the ones I know of down at the bottom of this page. I've broken the pages up by decade so that they will load faster.

Until the start of 1991, the articles were almost all about casting a particular porcelain doll - you'd get a great picture with the instructions showing the doll dressed as the artist visualized their doll to look. While you got the instructions for dealing with the greenware and painting it, you seldom got instructions or patterns for the clothing the dolls wore. You had a token article on custom dressing your dolls(which was quite sporadic) and the famous Poissot pattern in the middle. That changed somewhat in early 1991, where you start getting a LOT more clothing/accessory patterns. I became a lot more avid in searching out missing issues once I realized this! By 1992, you were also getting more articles on dolls other than porcelain. By 2000, you were also getting great articles on cloth dolls by giants in the field like Lisa Lichtenfels and Antonette Cely.

So now's a good time to remind people that this page is a reference source only - I cannot photocopy articles or patterns for you without violating the artists' copyright or depriving second-hand sellers a legitimate source of revenue. In my own searches for suitable materials to support my craft, I realized there was no resource of this nature(the bibliography) or scope available, and that in many cases, this "culture" of materials was quite literally being thrown away by people who had no knowledge or interest in the art of making dolls and soft toys. In my search for these materials, I've heard over and over again, "Oh, yeah, my mother/aunt/grandmother made dolls. When she passed away, we had so much trash to throw away..." AAAAHHH!!! The last straw for me was finding out that the Library of Congress keeps very little information on any of these publications, if any, and certainly doesn't archive them as I always thought they must. I am not a professional scholar, and my learning curve is always shallower than I'd like it to be, but I strive for accuracy, and to include all the information that I myself would find helpful. As I collect requests for information, I've had to revisit(i.e., revise entire pages) what information I thought pertinent to fellow crafters and artists(like including the size of the doll the pattern fits! - yep, you'd think that would be a no brainer...) While I have already put thousands of hours into this project, and there is already a healthy pile of information steadily growing - what you see is still only the tip of the iceberg. I search diligently for examples of titles I have missed, and for hints of titles referred to in other publications, and after six years, I STILL come across titles I had no inkling were out there.
