SUMMARY: I've been slow filling in all the issues here - I had to pay over $20 for the Premiere issue, and the first one I bid on went for almost $50! They hold their value really well - unusual for a magazine.

The photography is often a bit too artistic for my tastes - in that the backgrounds sometimes distract from the showcased doll instead of complimenting it - but your mileage may vary. They definitely give a huge gallery of ideas, techniques and styles in each issue, which makes them a pleasure just to thumb through. The showcases usually give a description of why the artist chose to make this doll, and a (brief)description of the process. It's useful as a jumping off point for ideas and processes. I wouldn't describe this magazine as a "How To" periodical, but nor is it simply a collector's journal. I was impressed with the huge variety of artists they managed to pack into each issue - well worth the bucks.

It is still in publication, so you can pick up a subscription at: http://www.artdollquarterly.com/

Follow Up: I've finally put together most of a run of this title and my first impressions were overall correct. There's an amazing wealth of ideas and peeks at a huge variety of very talented artists' work in every issue. The photography at times gets a little too artistic itself, and pulls attention away from the art doll it's supposed to be showcasing, but that may not bother you as it does me. I do highly recommend this publication for inspiration and a means of keeping up with what amazing things are being done in the arena of art dolls. It's pricey, but at 128 pages you get your money's worth, i.e.- it's not 9/10th advertisements and 1/10th articles. They keep a balance that doesn't make me think I'm buying an issue for its ad campaigns. If you love originality and variety, Go out and buy it. I promise you won't regret it.
