Title: Closet Monsters: Stitch Creatures You'll Love from Clothing You Don't
Author: John Murphy
Publication Date: TPB:2010
Publisher: Lark Crafts, Asheville, NC
Page Count: 144
Book Dimensions(ht. x w.): 9" x 9"
ISBN: 9781600596049
PATTERN RATING: His monsters are creative and very individual. His pattern pieces are basic and very small - you'll need to blow them up considerably before they are useful, and spend a lot of time marking them - which takes experience.
INSTRUCTION RATING: Instructions are broken down into stages, and there are a lot of colorful illustrations to help support them. He gives you a photo of the garment he used for the pattern, explains why he used certain features of the garment to make his monster parts, then shows you how to deconstruct the garment to make a monster.
SUMMARY- This book is part of the "ugly is cute" subgenre of soft toys - and they are cute. They are skillfully made without the visible blanket stitching that I hate so much. I was entertained by Mr. Murphy's cartoons throughout and charmed by the personality of the toys. I loved this book, but until you've got some experience with a sewing machine and using patterns, I'd wait on using it.
